The Cartier Tonneau ref. W1509551 is a rare and elegant interpretation of one of Cartier’s most historically significant watch designs. Crafted from platinum, this exceptional timepiece combines the distinctive elongated tonneau-shaped case with a beautifully guilloché dial, Roman numerals and blued-steel hands.

Originally introduced in 1906, the Tonneau is among Cartier’s earliest wristwatch designs. This particular reference dates to the 1990s and represents a sophisticated interpretation of the original design, combining traditional proportions with precious-metal construction.

Case

The distinctive barrel-shaped case is crafted from platinum, with elegant curves designed to follow the natural shape of the wrist.

The case measures approximately 26 mm in width and 39–40 mm in length, excluding the extended lugs. Its slim profile, approximately 8 mm thick, makes it particularly comfortable as a dress watch.

The polished case features a smooth bezel and Cartier’s characteristic beaded winding crown, topped with a blue cabochon.

Dial

The beautiful silver-white guilloché dial features an intricate wave-like pattern radiating from the centre, adding depth and texture to the otherwise restrained design.

Large black Roman numerals follow the curved contours of the tonneau case, complemented by a traditional inner railway minute track.

Elegant blued-steel hands provide a striking contrast against the silvered dial.

A particularly attractive detail is the “CARTIER PARIS” signature, with “CARTIER” positioned in the upper half and “PARIS” below the centre. This configuration is characteristic of certain Cartier watches from the period.

Movement

Powered by a manual-winding Cartier movement, offering a traditional mechanical experience consistent with the watch’s classical character.

The movement provides hours and minutes without additional complications, preserving the simplicity and elegance of the original Tonneau design.

Strap

Fitted with a blue leather strap and whitegold deployant clasp, complementing the blued-steel hands and platinum case.

Very nice overall condition with light signs of wear consistent with age. The case shows minor surface scratches, visible in the photographs.
