Day-Date

Rolex Day-Date 36 – Ref. 18038 | Black Dial | 1983

The Rolex Day-Date ref. 18038, dating to circa 1983, is a classic example of Rolex’s flagship precious-metal model. Crafted from 18kt yellow gold, this example combines the traditional 36 mm Oyster case and fluted bezel with a striking black dial.

Case

The Oyster case is crafted from 18kt yellow gold and measures 36 mm in diameter. It features the characteristic 18kt yellow-gold fluted bezel, screw-down crown and sapphire crystal with Cyclops magnifier over the date.

The ref. 18038 belongs to the first Day-Date generation to feature a sapphire crystal, replacing the acrylic crystal found on the preceding ref. 1803.

Dial

The black dial provides a strong contrast against the yellow-gold case and features applied yellow-gold hour markers and matching hands.

The signature Day-Date layout displays the day of the week in full at 12 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock beneath the Cyclops magnifier.

Movement

Powered by the automatic Rolex calibre 3055, a chronometer-certified movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) with approximately 48 hours of power reserve.

The calibre 3055 introduced a quick-set date, while the day remains non-quick-set. Its successor, calibre 3155, introduced independent quick-setting of both the day and date.

Strap

Fitted with an aftermarket leather-rubber combination strap and aftermarket buckle.

Condition

Very nice overall vintage condition with signs of wear consistent with age. The movement runs accurately. No service history available.
