Rolex Day-Date 36 “Tapestry Dial” – Ref. 18038 (1984)

The Rolex Day-Date ref. 18038 is one of the defining Day-Date references of the 1980s, combining the traditional 36 mm solid-gold President design with important technical improvements over the earlier ref. 1803. Dating from 1984, this example is particularly attractive thanks to its distinctive Tapestry dial, whose fine vertical texture gives the classic Day-Date design additional depth and character.

Case

The classic Oyster case measures 36 mm and is crafted from 18kt yellow gold, complemented by the signature 18kt yellow-gold fluted bezel.

The ref. 18038 belongs to the first generation of Day-Date watches fitted with a sapphire crystal, replacing the acrylic crystal of the preceding ref. 1803. The familiar Cyclops magnifier sits above the date at 3 o’clock.

Dial

The highlight of this 1984 example is its distinctive Tapestry dial, characterized by fine vertical grooves running across its surface. The texture creates a subtle play of light while retaining the restrained and elegant appearance associated with the Day-Date.

Applied yellow-gold hour markers and matching hands complement the dial, together with the model’s signature full day display at 12 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock.

Movement

Powered by the automatic Rolex calibre 3055, a COSC-certified chronometer movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Strap

Fitted with an aftermarket leather strap and aftermarket pin buckle.

Condition

Very nice overall vintage condition with light signs of wear consistent with age. The movement runs accurately. In-house revision August 2026.
